The Donald Trump administration has unveiled its '2026 National Drug Control Strategy' to stop the supply of drugs and restore public health. This strategy outlines a whole-of-government response to end the drug crisis.

In the first year of the Trump administration, U.S. drug overdose deaths decreased by over 13,000 compared to the previous 12 months. This figure represents a significant drop from the highest points seen under the current and previous administrations.

Under this strategy, the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) plans to enhance information sharing and law enforcement cooperation with international partners to isolate drug cartel terrorists. The High-Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas (HIDTA) program will strengthen collaboration among federal, state, local, and tribal law enforcement agencies, working in conjunction with Homeland Security Task Forces.

Alongside supply interdiction, demand reduction strategies will also be pursued. The administration is shifting its policy away from previous harm-reduction-focused programs to a new primary prevention system aimed at protecting youth, emphasizing that a drug-free life is the social norm.

For addiction treatment, a system will be established to promote early detection and initial-stage treatment, mirroring infectious disease response methods. For the first time, this strategy includes the official recognition of the healing power of faith. Citing that 83% of Americans believe in God or a universal spirit, it highlights the role of faith-based approaches and declared this strategy as the most ambitious attempt to combat the drug crisis in U.S. history.
