Pediatricians Raise Alarm Over Shrinking Recess Time

Pediatricians are raising concerns about the decreasing amount of recess time for children, stressing its significant impact on health and learning. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), in updated guidelines released for the first time in a decade, urged schools to protect children's recess periods. The guidelines state that unstructured breaks offer substantial benefits for children's health, learning, and behavior, explaining that recess helps children improve concentration and memory between classes. It also contributes to social development, increased self-confidence, and greater physical activity.

However, research indicates that up to 40% of U.S. schools have reduced or eliminated recess since the mid-2000s. Dr. Robert Murray, lead author of the new guidelines, commented, "Recess, if fully utilized, has very powerful benefits." The academy recommends guaranteeing at least 20 minutes of recess per day, suggesting multiple breaks.

Doctors explain that recess is not just for younger children. Amidst increasing screen time, older students also need time away from devices to move their bodies and recharge. Expert opinions suggest that models operating in some countries like Denmark, Japan, and the UK, which provide break times after 45-50 minutes of class, can improve both learning outcomes and student well-being.
