Government and Employers Clash Over Distribution of AI Excess Profits
The business community is pushing back against the government's proposal for how to socially distribute 'excess profits' that may arise from advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) technology, arguing it contradicts market economy principles. This marks the beginning of an important discussion about the economic order of the AI era.
The government has stated that the excess profits generated in the AI era are a result of not only internal corporate efforts but also collaboration with partner companies, local communities, and national infrastructure, thus necessitating social discussion. The Ministry of Employment and Labor is preparing a forum on this topic titled 'Exploring the Possibility of a Korean-Style Social Solidarity Wage Policy.'
The business community argued that management performance, such as operating profit, is not wages, and decisions regarding investment, research and development, and employment expansion are the exclusive rights of the company.
This debate has led to questions about the changes in the future economic order due to AI and robots, and the sustainability of the existing capitalist structure that links human labor, income, and consumption. AI and physical AI have begun to alter production structures, and their impact is likely to grow significantly in the future.
