Southern Gyeonggi Department Stores See Sales Surge Thanks to Semiconductor Exports
The booming domestic semiconductor industry has markedly improved sales performance at department stores in Southern Gyeonggi Province. This is attributed to increased semiconductor-related jobs and higher incomes stimulating regional consumer sentiment, even amidst a poor stock market. The boom in AI semiconductors has contributed to significant profits for certain companies, boosting market liquidity.
Special bonuses (performance-based pay) distributed by IT firms, including Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, surged compared to the same period last year. At a department store in Dongtan New City, Hwaseong, Southern Gyeonggi Province, a popular destination for semiconductor industry employees, sales of home appliances and childcare products to couples with strollers increased by 35% year-on-year, while luxury goods sales rose by 40%.
This consumption increase continues the upward trend in the Bank of Korea's consumer sentiment index. Expectations for wage increases also reached their highest level since July last year. The influx of funds from the semiconductor industry, performance-based pay, and a partial stock market rally have resulted in increased consumer purchasing power and enhanced expectations of future income.
