North Korea Deploys New 5,000-Ton Destroyer, Kim Jong Un Stresses Naval Nuclearization
North Korea has deployed its new 5,000-ton class destroyer, the 'Choe Hyon', into active service. The Korean Central News Agency reported on June 24 that the Choe Hyon's commissioning ceremony took place the previous day at Nampo Port, attended by State Affairs Commission Chairman Kim Jong Un.
Kim Jong Un emphasized the importance of the Navy's nuclear armament. In his speech at the commissioning ceremony, Kim stressed, "The combat capability of our Navy will become a marvel beyond imagination." He added, "The Navy is proudly growing into a military branch equipped with strategic means, and the nuclear armament of the Navy is precisely following its historical course."
Kim instructed that "two ships of the 'Choe Hyon' class or larger surface vessels, including 10,000-ton class cruisers, must be built each year during the five-year plan period, and all plans concerning the construction of naval power, including the construction of frigates and special purpose vessels, and the development and production of underwater weapon systems, must be accurately executed." He described the lack of bases to berth large combat vessels like the Choe Hyon as a "happy worry," stating, "The construction of modern naval bases has emerged as an urgent and essential task."
North Korea's military buildup and pursuit of nuclear armament for its Navy are expected to increase tensions in the Northeast Asian security landscape and could lead to implications, including potential cooperation with China and Russia.
