Song Young-gil: Winning Over 20s and 30s is Key to Regime's Renewal
Democratic Party lawmaker Song Young-gil emphasized that the renewal of the ruling regime is difficult without the support of young people in their 20s and 30s.
Song stressed that to achieve regime renewal, the party must move beyond the debate over 'abolishing prosecutors' supplementary investigation rights'—a point of contention among leading party leadership candidates—and instead focus on winning the hearts of young adults in their 20s and 30s, which he described as the era's most pressing reform task. He pointed out that spending time on the intra-party debate regarding the prosecution's supplementary investigation rights yields no practical benefit.
Song criticized the complacent view that the previous election results could be solved with a 'boomer' perspective and denounced the easy dismissal of young people turning away as 'far-right radicalization'.
He argued that the Democratic Party must undergo a complete overhaul to become a party where 20- and 30-somethings and university students can dream of their future.
Song, a likely candidate for the party leadership election to be held on August 17, explained the importance of securing public sentiment from the 20s and 30s generations at a party members' convention for the National University Student Committee held at the National Assembly.
He proposed a 'single-point constitutional amendment' in relation to the preferential hiring issue within the election management committee.
