Google Shuts Down 449 Korean-Language YouTube Channels for Opinion Manipulation... Unusually Large Crackdown

According to the '2Q 2024 Adversarial Threat Report' released by Google's Threat Analysis Group (TAG) on the 31st, 449 Korean-language YouTube channels that attempted organized opinion manipulation were shut down en masse in the second quarter of this year (April–June). The channels were blocked between April and June, with monthly figures showing 22 closures in April, 367 in May, and 60 in June. Notably, 367 channels—accounting for 81.7% of the total—were sanctioned in May alone.

May was the period when the 6th local elections were held, and the channels blocked during that time were found to have operated with specific political leanings: 142 criticizing the government, 71 supporting the government, and 58 supporting specific politicians. In April and June, 22 channels supporting specific politicians or criticizing specific political parties, and 60 channels distributing content critical of specific politicians, were sanctioned consecutively.

All of these actions fall under what Google classifies as 'coordinated inauthentic behavior' (concealing identity and intervening in opinion in an organized manner). Unlike cases involving other countries such as China, Russia, or Iran, Google did not disclose details such as the backing state, specific operators, or channel names for the Korean channels. It is very unusual for Korean political channels to be detected on such a large scale in these quarterly reports.
