On the Last Trading Day of August, 'Value' Shines Amid Global Index Declines

On August 31, 2026, global financial markets closed lower amid concerns over U.S. Federal Reserve tightening and adjustments in the semiconductor sector. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell by over 0.7%, and the tech-heavy Nasdaq succumbed to selling pressure. In particular, the semiconductor index (SOX) plummeted 2.9%, chilling investor sentiment. However, amidst such rough waters, the AI Value Investment Portfolio maintains steady upward momentum, drawing attention. With a return of over 44% on initial capital (current total assets: $14,416), this portfolio manages risk and maximizes returns not merely by chasing the AI hype, but through intense valuation analysis.

Asset Trends Rising Above Volatility

Asset flows over the past week demonstrate both the defensive and aggressive nature of this portfolio. On the 28th, profits were realized by selling a portion of SOXL holdings during a surge in the semiconductor sector, boosting the portfolio value to $14,955. However, on the 31st, a market-wide decline and semiconductor correction led to a temporary consolidation. Nevertheless, this appears to be merely a technical correction rather than a signal of shaking fundamentals. Despite a high-interest rate environment with U.S. 10-year Treasury yields soaring to the 4.7% range and a rising VIX (volatility index), the portfolio has maintained its upward trend since breaking past the $14,000 mark on the 25th.

Reading Stock Value via PEG, Beyond PER

The core of this strategy lies in identifying the PEG indicator—earnings growth potential hidden behind seemingly high Price-to-Earnings (PER) ratios. NVIDIA (NVDA), currently the largest holding, may appear somewhat expensive with a PER of 27.5x, but its PEG of 0.63 suggests explosive earnings growth relative to its stock price. Broadcom (AVGO) also maintains a PEG of 0.42 against a PER of 61.4x, indicating that the market premium remains sufficiently defensive.

Meanwhile, recently purchased Intel (INTC) and Micron (MU) present an intriguing contrast in terms of valuation. Micron is in the undervalued territory with a PER of 21.1x and a PEG of 0.14, suggesting significant room for further upside. Conversely, Intel is currently trading lower at $89.47 than its entry price of $104.56, yet a contrarian buying position is being maintained with an eye on future growth potential reflecting expectations for an AI supply chain recovery. Big Tech names like Amazon (AMZN) and Meta (META) also maintain PERs in the early 20s and PEGs below 1, building a solid defense for earnings even in a high-interest rate environment.
