Cheong Wa Dae says it will not seek jurisdiction dispute ruling over refusal to renominate Cho Hee-dea
Cheong Wa Dae announced via a press notice on the 23rd that it is not considering filing a jurisdiction dispute petition with the Constitutional Court regarding Chief Justice Cho Hee-dea's refusal to comply with its request to renominate a justice candidate.
On the previous day, the 22nd, Chief Justice Cho responded to Cheong Wa Dae's renomination request by saying, "There is no specific constitutional basis or justification to warrant a renomination," and declined to comply. Cheong Wa Dae pushed back, calling the move "an effort to neutralize the appointment power of the elected president."
The move to file a jurisdiction dispute petition first came from the opposition. On the 21st, the People Power Party filed a jurisdiction dispute petition with the Constitutional Court, arguing that Cheong Wa Dae's refusal to submit the appointment motion for Justice candidate Son Bong-gi—nominated by Chief Justice Cho—to the National Assembly and instead requesting a renomination infringed on lawmakers' right to deliberate.
