Controversy Over Political Bias as Broadcasting Commission Chairman Takes Office

The inauguration ceremony for the new Korea Communications Standards Commission (KCSC) was held, but questions surrounding the committee's political impartiality arose from the very start.

This situation emerged due to the combination of Standing Committee Member Kim Woo-seok's apology for past controversies and the failure to elect a chairman for the Telecommunications Subcommittee through internal consensus. At the inauguration ceremony for KCSC Chairman Go Gwang-heon on April 16, Standing Committee Member Kim Woo-seok stated that he sincerely apologized for the controversies and social criticism during the previous Ryu Hee-rim administration, as a member of the committee. Kim Woo-seok, who was appointed upon recommendation from the People Power Party, had previously spearheaded sanctions against reporting critical of the former government. Despite Kim's expression of apology, attending employees protested by holding signs that read 'Kim Woo-seok Step Down'.

In the election for the chairman of the Telecommunications Subcommittee, under the KCSC, Standing Committee Member Kim Woo-seok failed to secure a majority of votes and was not elected. The KCSC chapter of the Korean Federation of Press Unions had expressed hope that Kim would step down from the subcommittee chairmanship and demonstrate remorse. Discussions regarding the suitability for the chairmanship have been postponed to the next meeting.
