Turkey Middle School Shooting Kills 9; Misogyny Motive Possible
A 14-year-old middle school student opened fire at a school in Kahramanmaraş, southern Turkey, around 1:30 PM on November 15. The incident resulted in the deaths of eight students and one teacher, after which the perpetrator, identified as 14-year-old 8th-grader Mersinli, took his own life. The tragedy claimed a total of nine lives and left 13 others injured.
The student identified as the suspect had previously posted images related to misogynistic criminals on social media, prompting an investigation into the motive behind the attack. Analysis of the perpetrator Mersinli's digital records by the Turkish General Directorate of Security (EGM) revealed that his WhatsApp profile featured an image reminiscent of Elliot Rodger, who murdered six people in a 2014 shooting rampage in California. Authorities have provisionally determined the incident to be an individual act unrelated to terrorism.
The perpetrator was found to be carrying five firearms and seven magazines at the time of the attack. It is believed he brought the weapons and ammunition, belonging to his father, a former police officer, into the school hidden in a bag. Prosecutors have arrested the father and are investigating.
Arrest warrants have been issued for 83 individuals involved in posts that glorified the crime or perpetrators, or disrupted public order, as authorities launched a crackdown, blocking 940 related social media accounts.
