LG Uplus Expands AI-Powered Road Hazard Detection System to Yongin
LG Uplus has expanded the application of its 'AI Road Hazard Management System,' which integrates artificial intelligence (AI) technology with Real-Time Kinematic (RTK) ultra-precise positioning, across the entire city of Yongin, Gyeonggi Province. This system leverages cutting-edge technology to identify road hazards in real-time, contributing to enhanced safety for drivers and pedestrians.
The system combines RTK technology with AI to automatically detect and analyze road hazards such as potholes, cracks, and surface damage occurring during vehicle operation. RTK terminals and AI video monitoring equipment mounted on vehicles capture road conditions in real-time, and detected hazard information is immediately linked to the management system, leading to prompt repair work. LG Uplus's RTK technology reduces the multi-meter error range of general Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) to centimeter-level accuracy, precisely pinpointing hazardous locations. It allows for comprehensive monitoring of large areas using actual vehicles operating on roads, and when AI detects road damage, it is automatically registered in the complaint system, establishing an integrated framework that supports swift responses from relevant departments.
From April 2023 to February 2024, the AI Road Hazard Management System detected over 3,200 road hazards. During the same period, road-related complaints decreased by approximately 19% compared to the previous year, and compensation for damages due to road defects also saw a reduction of about 25%.
Based on these achievements, Yongin City plans to expand the number of vehicles equipped with the system to a total of 300. LG Uplus and its partner Milliway aim to expand their smart road management business nationwide to other local governments, using the Yongin City case as a model.
