Candidates Debate Authority of New Gwangju Integrated City Mayor
At a debate for proportional representation candidates of the Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Metropolitan City Council for the June 3 local elections, candidates clashed over checks on the inaugural mayor's powers, the Democratic Party's monopolistic grip on politics, and solutions for youth employment. The debate, hosted by the Gwangju Election Broadcasting Debate Commission and broadcast by KBC Gwangju Broadcasting on the 27th, featured candidates Park Man (Democratic Party), Lee O-sook (People Power Party), Kim Boram (Cho Kuk Innovation Party), and Park Sun-ah (Justice Party), representing their parties' proportional representation nominees.
The debate highlighted how the city council will scrutinize the powers concentrated in the inaugural mayor of the Integrated Metropolitan City, set to launch in July. Concerns were raised about the potential for the Democratic Party's strong base in the Gwangju and Jeonnam regions to create a monopolistic political structure. Candidate Kim Boram urged for diversity in the regional political ecosystem, presenting new visions and alternatives for regional development as a nascent party. Candidate Park Sun-ah analyzed that political imbalance in the region diminishes citizens' political efficacy, emphasizing the Justice Party's role as a check against the Democratic Party's single-party system.
Various solutions were proposed for the youth employment issue. Candidate Park Man pledged to create new jobs by fostering future industries in the Integrated Metropolitan City, vowing to enhance business attraction and collaboration with regional universities. Candidate Lee O-sook expressed expectations for job creation through expanded support for youth startups and regulatory easing to stimulate corporate activity. Candidate Kim Boram prioritized supporting technological innovation in regional small and medium-sized enterprises and building a social safety net for precarious workers such as platform laborers. Candidate Park Sun-ah argued for stable job creation through the expansion of public sector jobs and the vitalization of the regional social economy.
At the debate, candidates presented their respective policy visions for regional development.
