Ex-Presidents Rallying for PPP: Impact on Moderate Voters Uncertain

As former Presidents Lee Myung-bak and Park Geun-hye take to the campaign trail to support People Power Party (PPP) candidates ahead of the June 3 local elections, criticism and concerns about a negative impact on moderate voters and a return to the past are emerging both within and outside the party.

Former President Park Geun-hye endorsed Daegu mayoral candidate Chu Kyung-ho in Daegu on the 31st, stating that Chu is the right person to revitalize Daegu's economy. On the same day, former President Lee Myung-bak supported Busan mayoral candidate Park Heong-joon in Busan's Haeundae District, saying that if Park serves another four years as mayor, Busan's population will grow, attracting young people and tourists.

Within the PPP, voices of skepticism were raised, suggesting that while the former presidents' campaign support might effectively rally the traditional conservative base, its appeal to the crucial swing voters who decide election outcomes remains uncertain. Concerns were also voiced that relying on a flawed past is detrimental to rebuilding conservatism.

The Democratic Party of Korea strongly criticized the situation, referring to Lee and Park as part of a 'prison trio' ('Yoon, Lee, Park' are out and about) and accusing them of regressing to the past, distorting democracy, and disregarding the public. They asserted that the majority of common-sense-driven citizens will not tolerate this.

Political commentators pointed out that while the former presidents may see these campaign appearances as opportunities to regain political presence and restore their honor, it is a shameful act for elders who should be presenting national visions for the benefit of a specific party.
