Democratic Party Questions People Power Party's Election Appeal: 'Should Precedent Be Repeated?'
The Democratic Party has demanded the withdrawal of an election appeal filed by the People Power Party, which is calling for re-elections in some areas, calling it a 'baseless appeal.' Cheon Jun-ho, the party's senior deputy floor leader, questioned why the People Power Party selected only six areas with insufficient ballots as targets for their appeal, retorting, 'Why were Daegu and Gyeongnam, which also had insufficient ballots, not included in the appeal?' He asked, 'Is the standard for filing the appeal whether the 'Yoon Again' candidate wins?' Cheon stated, 'This is a difficult appeal to comprehend.'
The leadership of the People Power Party decided to file an election appeal with the National Election Commission demanding re-elections in six areas, including the winner's district of Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon, as well as in Gyeonggi, Incheon, Busan, Ulsan, and Gwangju/Jeonnam, in relation to the ballot shortage incident during the June 3 local elections.
The Public Official Election Act stipulates that an election can only be declared void when it is recognized that the outcome was affected.
