US Grants 60-Day Waiver on Iran Oil Sanctions

The United States has temporarily suspended sanctions prohibiting Iran's oil sales for 60 days. The U.S. Department of the Treasury has issued a license deferring sanctions on Iranian crude oil for 60 days, which will be effective until August 21, 1:01 AM (U.S. Eastern Time). This allows Iran to sell crude oil products and receive payments in U.S. dollars. This significant decision, which could impact global oil price fluctuations and geopolitical tensions, is seen as a response to Iran's acceptance of nuclear inspections by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

The two nations have also agreed to establish a 'hotline' communication system to ensure safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz and to create a 'de-escalation mechanism' to manage conflicts on the Lebanese front. U.S. and Iranian officials are continuing working-level talks.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is scheduled to visit Middle Eastern allies to discuss passage through the Strait of Hormuz and regional peace cooperation, while Iranian Parliament Speaker Ghalibaf has headed to Oman. The agreement is expected to show signs of recovering traffic through the Strait of Hormuz and advance discussions on regional de-escalation and peace cooperation.
