OpenAI Unveils In-House AI Chip 'Halapeño'
OpenAI has revealed its in-house AI chip 'Halapeño,' developed in collaboration with Broadcom. The chip is slated for installation in data centers starting late this year, aiming to boost the performance of large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT.
Initial test results show 'Halapeño' outperforms current state-of-the-art technologies in terms of performance per watt. OpenAI's CEO has assessed the chip as having comparable performance to NVIDIA's Blackwell chip and Google's TPUs.
The chip will be mass-produced by TSMC, while Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix will supply memory chips to Broadcom. OpenAI and Broadcom plan to continue their technological development by releasing new chip versions annually, starting with the next generation in 2028.
