Trump Defends Soldier Amid Gambling Allegations, Cites Pete Rose
Former U.S. President Donald Trump defended soldier Gannon Ken Van Dyke, referencing Major League Baseball player Pete Rose, who faced disciplinary action for gambling in the past. Van Dyke is a U.S. soldier accused of gambling while allegedly trying to assist in the ousting of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.
Gannon Ken Van Dyke is accused of betting on Polymarket, a prediction market, on the ouster of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro during the approximately one month he was involved in planning and executing the operation to capture the president. He has also been indicted for the illegal use of classified government information.
Former President Trump stated that Van Dyke's case was "not wrong," referencing the incident where Pete Rose was permanently banned from Major League Baseball for gambling. Trump added, "I will look into this matter" regarding the allegations against Van Dyke.
Zach Dean, a writer for the media outlet OutKick, argued that Trump's remarks were reasonable. Dean stated, "It's foolish to punish people for betting on themselves or their country." He added, "I don't understand why Rose was punished so severely for betting on his own team." While acknowledging that a soldier betting on the arrest of a brutal dictator differs from personal gambling, he speculated that the soldier likely experienced extreme tension and excitement.
Former President Trump has previously posted on social media urging Major League Baseball's commissioner to induct Pete Rose into the Hall of Fame. MLB has reviewed Pete Rose's permanent ineligibility in recent years, calling it a "difficult decision."
