Ruling and Opposition Parties in Fierce Clash Over 'Fabricated Prosecution Special Prosecutor Act'
Clashes between the ruling and opposition parties are ongoing over the 'Special Prosecutor Act on Fabricated Indictments' (Special Prosecutor Act) being pursued by the Democratic Party.
Park Seong-hoon, senior spokesperson for the People Power Party, defined the Democratic Party's special prosecutor bill as a 'Cancellation of Prosecution Special Prosecutor Act' and criticized it as an attempt to "create a presidential acquittal." Pointing out that 8 out of the 12 investigation targets are related to the president himself, he argued that the bill is a challenge to the constitutional order and an act that undermines the rule of law. Park urged the president to exercise the veto power and warned that if the veto is not exercised, the parties will face public judgment in the local elections.
The conflict between the two sides stems from their differing stances on the scope and purpose of the special prosecutor bill. While the Democratic Party claims the mandate to rectify illegal acts and abuses of power by political prosecutors, the People Power Party counters that the bill is an attempt to acquit the president and an act that shakes the constitutional order.
