Lee Jae-myung tops politician mentions with 281 articles, in a landslide

President Lee Jae-myung recorded the No. 1 spot in politician media buzz over the past week with 281 articles.

The gap with second-place Jang Dong-hyuk (64 articles) is a staggering 217. Considering that the combined article count of all politicians ranked second through tenth is 336, the figure underscores just how dominant President Lee is in the public discourse. His 88.6% jump from 149 articles the previous week is also notable. The ruling and opposition parties' clash over the so-called fabricated-prosecution special counsel bill, along with news of the Yeonpyeong Island comfort train performance resuming after 15 years, are believed to have driven the surge in mentions.

The fabricated-prosecution special counsel bill reshapes the buzz landscape

The biggest issue of the period was undoubtedly the fabricated-prosecution special counsel bill. Looking at the key article headlines in the ranking data, the top stories for five politicians — No. 1 Lee Jae-myung, No. 2 Jang Dong-hyuk, No. 3 Yoon Suk-yeol, No. 6 Han Dong-hoon, and No. 10 Jung Jeong-sik — are all tied to the bill. With the ruling party framing it as a quest for the truth and the opposition as political retaliation, a single bill lifted politicians' mention counts across the board.

In particular, former President Yoon Suk-yeol saw a steep rise in mentions, nearly 168%, from 22 articles the previous week to 59. His remark that the fabricated-prosecution special counsel bill is a "privilege law for Lee Jae-myung" fueled the coverage. Though he ranks third by raw numbers, by growth rate he belongs to this week's biggest climbers — evidence that reporting momentum lingers even after his impeachment.

Han Dong-hoon stands at 35 articles, virtually unchanged from last week (34). Yet his criticism of the bill — that it "creates a one-person privileged class" — generated an issue distinct in tone from the mid-tier group of Joo Jin-woo and Cho Hee-dae. Reports that the feuding Han Dong-hoon and Cho Kuk spoke with one voice on the same issue signal that the bill debate has transcended partisan lines.

Winners and losers by growth rate

Looking solely at percentage changes makes the meaning of the ranking shifts clearer. Joo Jin-woo, ranked seventh, jumped 156% from 9 to 23 articles, while eighth-place Jung Chung-rae soared 283% from 6 to 23. Both are parties to, or figures implicated in, the infighting within the three-way Shincheonji alliance. Despite Prime Minister Kim Min-seok's public apology, infighting continued within the Democratic Party, producing an effect in which the ruling camp's internal strife boosted the media buzz of opposition figures.

There is movement in the other direction as well. Fourth-place Oh Se-hoon fell 26%, from 69 to 51 articles. His cautious stance on Han Dong-hoon's return to the party — saying "there must be a shared consensus first" — appears to have lowered his issue density. Ninth-place Cho Hee-dae dropped 41%, from 32 to 19 articles; even after a poll showing 41% trust and 47% distrust in the courts was reported and impeachment calls followed, his mention count still fell. It is read as a case where the legal course of events could not keep pace with the speed of issue consumption.

What the concentration of buzz means

The core of this week's data is the dominant share held by the top-ranked politician. Jang Dong-hyuk, despite being the People Power Party's floor leader, managed only a quarter of President Lee's count. With a sitting president, a prime minister (fifth-place Kim Min-seok), and an opposition leader (second place) all in the upper tier at once, the leadership of both major parties sits at the center of the issues.

Also noteworthy is Justice Minister (acting) Jung Jeong-sik entering the rankings at No. 10 with 12 articles. That the movements of the Justice Ministry chief are themselves news ahead of the bill's vote shows the fabricated-prosecution special counsel bill evolving beyond mere political sparring into a constitutional clash between the executive and legislative branches.

The future direction of the buzz will hinge on the outcome of the bill. If a plenary vote takes place, follow-up battles between supporters and opponents will likely raise mention counts again for the Lee Jae-myung, Han Dong-hoon, and Yoon Suk-yeol cluster. Meanwhile, the Shincheonji infighting is settling down after the apology, with Kim Min-seok and Jung Chung-rae expected to slip slightly in the rankings. Mention counts are a metric that leaves a trajectory. Even if one week's numbers fade away, the shifts in the balance of political power those numbers created will be recorded again in next week's rankings.
